Few things are as annoying as a printer that refuses to print the one document you need. Most printing faults are simple. Try these checks before you call anyone.
1. Check the basics
Confirm the printer is on, has paper and shows no error light or message. Check that the cables are firmly seated. For a wireless printer, confirm it is connected to your Wi-Fi.
2. Restart everything
Restart the printer and the computer. If the printer connects over Wi-Fi, restart the router as well.
3. Clear the print queue
A single stuck job can block everything behind it. Open the print queue from your printer settings, cancel all documents and try again with one small test page.
4. Make sure the right printer is selected
Computers often remember several printers, including old ones and PDF writers. Check that the correct printer is the default. If it shows as Offline, turn off the “Use printer offline” option and check the connection.
5. Check the network address
A wireless or network printer can be given a new address when the router restarts. The computer then looks for it in the wrong place. Printing the printer’s network settings page shows its current address. Assigning a fixed address stops the problem from returning. We set this up for homes and offices.
6. Reinstall the driver
Remove the printer from the computer and add it again, using the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website. A Windows update can break an old driver.
7. Test from another device
If a phone or another computer prints without trouble, the printer is fine and the fault is on the first computer. If nothing can print, look at the printer.
Print quality problems
- Streaks or faded print: Run the printer’s own cleaning cycle. Inkjets that stand unused for weeks can dry out.
- Repeated paper jams: Remove every torn piece, check that the paper is dry and fits the guides, and do not overfill the tray. If jams keep returning, a worn roller is likely.
- Cartridge not recognised: Remove it, check for protective tape and seat it again.
When to call us
Grinding noises, repeated jams, error codes that return after a restart and marks that cleaning does not remove usually point to a hardware fault. We repair home, office and corporate printers. See our printer services page. Bring the printer to our workshop for a free quotation, or ask about remote help for driver and network problems.
