Windows comes with Microsoft Defender switched on. So do you need to pay for anything else? The honest answer is that it depends on you.
We resell Bitdefender, so we will say that upfront. We would still rather you buy the right thing than the most expensive thing.
What the built-in protection does well
Microsoft Defender gives Windows users a solid baseline at no extra cost. It scans files, blocks many known threats and updates automatically. For a careful user with a single Windows computer, that may be enough.
Where paid protection can add value
- More devices: One licence can cover Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone devices.
- Extra layers: Stronger web and phishing protection, ransomware safeguards and safer online banking.
- Support: Someone to call when an alert appears. For many families this matters more than any feature.
- Central management: Businesses can see and control every protected device from one place.
Questions to ask yourself
- How many devices do we use, and what are they?
- Does anyone bank online or handle sensitive documents on them?
- Do children or less technical family members use the computer?
- Who will help when something goes wrong?
One product at a time
Do not run two security suites together. They can conflict and slow the computer down. Windows Defender normally steps aside when another product takes over, but the old product should still be removed properly.
Protection alone is not enough
No product catches everything. We looked at one example in our article on Windows Defender being bypassed. Updates, backups, strong passwords and caution with links matter just as much. Our guide to spotting a scam message is a good place to start.
